The personal computer market may be shrinking, but Nvidia met profitability expectations in its latest quarter and raised its dividend.
The maker of graphics chips used in personal computers, mobile devices and supercomputers reported net income of $118.7 million for its third quarter, better than analysts expected. Revenue of $1.05 billion also topped estimates. Earnings per share of 20 cents were in line with analyst expectations, according to Thomson I/B/E/S data.
As part of its earnings announcement, Nvidia also raised its quarterly dividend 13% from 7.5 cents to 8.5 cents per quarter. The stock’s current yield, before the increase, is 2%.
Shares of Nvidia (NVDA) rallied 27 cents, or 1.9%, to $14.82 in after-hours trading after sinking 2.4% earlier in the day.
In an interview with Barrons.com late Thursday, CEO and co-founder Jen-Hsun Huang pointed to Nvidia’s specialty end markets for its graphics processing units (GPUs), saying the smartphone is not taking away demand for applications in gaming, high-end automobiles, and high-performance computing.
“We are focused on specialty parts of the PC industry and our segment of the market is highly valued,” Huang said, adding that Nvidia’s Tegra mobile processor unit business doubled since last quarter. “We expected it to recover from the trough and we are excited about that,” he said.
As for the PC market, Huang tells Barrons.com that he expects the overall mainstream PC market to decline about 10% in 2013, and Nvidia is looking for the next quarter to be flat. But he said Nvidia expects “Tegra to continue to grow, and we expect our GPU business to continue to be robust.”
